The Lizards Revenge protest festival is today challenging BHP Billiton to a “Great Debate” on the question: Should the Olympic Dam mine expand?
“After today’s disputes over the festival’s lizard mascot, the focus needs to return to the real issues of the proposed expansion of the mine,” said festival co-organiser Izzy Brown.
An invitation has been sent to the President and Chief Operating Officer of Olympic Dam, Dean Dalla Valle asking that he debate Arabunna elder Kevin Buzzacott and representatives of Lizards Revenge on the topic of the expansion.
The controversial proposed mine expansion will see Olympic Dam become the worlds largest uranium mine, exporting 19,000 tonnes of uranium annually for use in reactors like Fukushima.
“It’s time for all the cards to be on the table for everyone to see, because this is something that affects all of us. Let’s see who has the winning hand. Or do they have something to hide?” said Ms. Brown.
